Hico, TX: Where Old West Legends Meet Small-Town Living

Buyers looking for a place with real character will want to take a good look at Hico. Tucked in Hamilton County at the junction of U.S. 281 and Texas Highway 6, this charming town offers wide-open land, a walkable downtown, and a story you won't find anywhere else in Texas.

Hico's history goes back to the mid-1800s, when eight pioneer families arrived in covered wagons and settled along Honey Creek in what became Hamilton County. In 1880, the town moved two miles to sit along the Bosque River so it could be closer to the new railroad. Hico grew into a busy agricultural hub known for its cotton gins, flour mills, and lively livestock trade. Many of the original rock buildings downtown were built after fires destroyed much of the town in the 1890s, giving Hico's Main Street its timeless, old-town charm today.

Of course, most people know Hico for one famous legend: locals say the outlaw Billy the Kid didn't die in New Mexico in 1881, but actually lived to be 91 years old right here in Hico, Texas. Visitors can explore this wild tale at the Billy the Kid Museum, located in a former bank building downtown, and snap a photo with the bronze statue of Billy the Kid at the corner of Pecan and 2nd Street.

Beyond the legend, Hico has plenty for families and outdoor lovers. Hico City Park spans 43 acres along the Bosque River, with pavilions, playgrounds, sports fields, an aquatic splash pad, and over a mile of paved hike and bike trails. Downtown's antique shops, craft stores, and cowboy art galleries make for a fun afternoon, and adventurous types can try Siloville, a climbing gym built from old grain silos with a zip line and obstacle courses.

Best of all, Hico keeps you close to the action without the big-city price tag. It's just an hour and 20 minutes from Fort Worth, an hour and 45 minutes from Dallas, and about 2 hours from Austin. For anyone who wants small-town peace with an easy drive to the city, Hico is worth a serious look.
