Holland, TX: A Farming Town with Deep Czech and German Roots

If a tight-knit community with a rich cultural history sounds appealing, take a look at Holland. This small city sits at the intersection of State Highway 95 and Farm Road 2268, along Darrs Creek, about fifteen miles south of Temple in southeastern Bell County. Its country setting comes with quick access to Temple, Belton, and the rest of Central Texas.

Holland's story began in the 1870s. Around 1874, James R. Holland settled near what is now the town, and by 1878 he had built the first steam cotton gin in the southern part of the county. A post office opened soon after, and the railroad arrived not long after that. By the mid-1880s, the growing town shipped cotton and had grown to 300 residents, with several gins and mills, five general stores, four saloons, three hotels, a school, and a church.

Holland's history has a strong immigrant story woven through it. In the early 1900s, Czech families settled in the area, and a Czech Brethren Church was organized in 1910. That heritage still shapes the community's identity today. Holland also has a long tradition of civic pride—the Women's Study Club of Holland, one of the oldest women's civic groups in Texas, was formed in 1914 and remains part of the town's story.

Living in Holland means small-town quiet with easy access to bigger attractions nearby. Residents are just a short drive from Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake for boating and fishing, the Central Texas State Fair in Belton every September, and the Salado Art Fair each August. For those craving a slower pace of life without giving up regional conveniences, Holland offers a genuine slice of Central Texas farm country with a story all its own.
